Newton's Window SAT/ACT
A few words for you

Learning new words doesn't just help your SAT and ACT scores. Knowing the right words helps you write better,  read better - and say exactly what you mean.  Great stuff.

Here are a few new words to add to your repertoire, and get you started.

We have many great strategies for building your ability with words in the Newton's Window Workbook:  Raising Scores on the SAT, ACT, and PSAT Without Prep Classes.

Take me to the SAT/ACT Math Tip List

List #1

taciturn - not talkative, naturally silent. -(adj)
My taciturn uncle sees no reason to go into detail about his good news.  He lets his smile suffice

proximity - nearness (n)
Because of the proximity of the flames to our tent, we kept the water buckets ready.

incongruous - not fitting (adj)
The tennis shoes looked incongruous with the business suit.

emulate - to strive to equal or excel (v)
When she entertained, she tried to emulate her older sister's graciousness and style.

disdain - to scorn, (v), contempt (n)
His disdain for his roommate's choice of music was apparent before he uttered a word.

supercilious - excessively proud, disdainfully superior (adj)
How could someone so supercilious and haughty expect to win a popular election? She believes she is superior to everyone who would vote for her, and hasn't hesitated to let us know.

vilify- to defame or slander someone (v)
We thought he came to praise his partner, but instead he vilified him.

Get a notebook for writing down these and other words as you learn them.  Carry it with you in your notebook or purse, and use it to keep your new words in one place.  You can glance at it when you're on hold waiting, or in a lull in a class, or whenever.

To learn new words, - really learn them - read them, say them, close your eyes and try to remember the meanings.  Read the sentences so you get a better sense of the meaning. It also really helps to  write them.  Visit them again, and check yourself a week later to see if you remember them.
