Tip #1
If a = b/2, then b+2 = ?
A). a/2 B) a C) 2a+2
D) 2a E) a - 2
~~~~~~~~~
Notice that the question isn't asking for what b
is equal to, but what b + 2 is equal to.
Don't be put off by this. Often the
SAT/ACT will ask for terms slightly different than you're used to in homework problems.
But just remember how strong a tool algebra is.
Whatever we do to one side of an equation, we do to the other, to keep it in
balance.
First, isolate b. That is, multiply
both sides of the equation by 2, giving you:
2a = b.
Now, look at what we need: b + 2.
Simply add 2 to both sides of the equation, giving
2a + 2 = b + 2.
Answer C) is the right choice.
