| Life is complicated, but we
can simplify it. Let's begin with lemonade.
Lemonade is simple and pure pleasure.
And a great math experience for your kids. In so many ways.
Begin with the lemons. Little hands squeezing lemon halves as the
juice runs into measuring cups. How much juice comes out of one lemon?
There are 8 Tablespoons in 1/2 cup of juice. How many lemons would
we need to get 1/2 cup of lemon juice? How many for one cup?
How many cups of sugar do we need? How many cups of water?
Let's double the recipe. How much of each will we need?
Let's add up the cost of ingredients. Suppose lemons are 3 for
$1.00, and sugar is 15 cents per cup. How much did one batch cost?
If we use paper cups, we have to remember to add in the cost of cups.
Glasses from the kitchen save the cost of cups, and minimize the trash.
Ask your child how many cupfuls they think they can get from one pitcher
of lemonade. Now help them figure it out. First figure out how many ounces are
in the pitcher, then how many ounces in a cup. Now divide the ounces in a pitcher by
the number of ounces in a cup.
How much to charge? Will you make a profit if you sell all the
lemonade?
Make change. Subtraction was never sweeter. |
